"One day installation on most doors and windows"
New windows and doors not only make a home more attractive and comfortable, but also save you money on heating bills, cooling bills, and maintenance expense. Replacement window benefits Insulation efficiency. Approximatly half of all home cooling and heating energy losses occur through windows and doors. Old windows are the worst culprits because they have low insulation efficiency and often allow drafts to enter the home. Fortunately, recent advancements in materials and design have made windows much more effective in keeping the heat in during the winter and out during the summer. In fact, according to some sources, current windows are as much as four times more efficient than windows manufactured just 15 years ago. Thus, installing replacement windows can greatly reduce your energy bills.
WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER REPLACING YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS?
Attractiveness of design.
Replacement windows are available in a variety of types, designs, and colors to accent any home.
Maintenance.
Old wood windows require regular maintenance, including painting, stripping, and caulking, every couple of years to keep them looking good and performing well. Many homeowners who are fed up with maintenance headaches choose low-maintenance replacement windows.
Security.
Some older windows are easily forced and offer an easy target for potential intruders. The construction and design of many modern windows provide a substantial deterrent.
Common types of windows
- Wood is the traditional material used for windows. Wood windows can be elegant and attractive, and are available in a wide variety of designs. The price varies greatly, depending on quality and design. Wood can be stained or painted to match the decor of the house. However, wood absorbs water, and if neglected, it can rot or deteriorate. To keep wood looking its best, regular maintenance is required.
- Vinyl windows never require painting and are virtually maintenance free. Vinyl windows provide good insulation, are cost effective, and are available in a large selection of designs and colors. High-quality vinyl windows offer some of the best insulation available.
Other factors to consider.
Double-pane windows are superior to, but more expensive than, single-pane windows. Double-pane windows incorporate two parallel sheets of glass with an insulating dead air space between. Because of the extra pane, and more importantly, the space between the panes, double-pane windows greatly reduce the amount of heat transferred through the window. Additionally, to make double-pane windows even more efficient, the space between the panes is often sealed and filled with an inert gas, such as argon.
Special coatings.
A variety of special coatings can be applied to the glass pane during manufacturing to further reduce the amount of heat transferred through the glass. Low-emissivity glass (or Low-E glass, in industry jargon) is designed to reflect infrared heat back in the direction it came from. In the summer, it keeps the infrared heat out. In the winter, it keeps the infrared heat in.
Types of doors
Wooden doors
Most wooden doors are, in fact, not solid wood. Some doors are made with a medium density fiberboard core, others are made with poly board, and the lightest option uses a honeycomb core which is essentially cardboard.
Pros
- Elegant, timeless look and especially suited to older styles of homes
- Stained wood adds a sence of warmth
- Alternatives such as honeycomb core weigh half as much and cost less than solid styles ( for mainly interior use)
Cons
- Require ongoing maintenance such as staining and painting
- beware of cheap construction and buy appropriately
Aluminum or steel doors
These doors are normally powder coated with a color of your choosing. They can fit in well to contemporary interior designs. To say doors are made of aluminum is a slight misnomer – doors labeled aluminum are generally made of glass framed by metal.
Pros
- Generally more weatherproff than timber
- Don't require repainting
Cons
- Cannot be re-surfaced and be sure of your color when you buy unless you are painting it after install
French
commonly used to connect your garden with your house, a French door is one made of glass and framed (most commonly) by wood or aluminum. They are found as both single and double doors
Pros
- Lots of styles available to suit your homes design
- Perfect to let light into your home
Cons
- Fragile-look for strengthened glass ( tempered glass )
- Lets more heat in your home
Sliding
These doors are often a gateway to the backyard. Large glass panes let lots of light in, and lots of ventilation when opened. Solid sliding doors are used indoors when space is an issue as there may not be enough room for a wing door to open - this is especially useful in bathrooms. Inside, sliding doors are often ‘pocket’ doors – so called because they slide into a pocket in the wall when open.
Pros
- Requires less space than hinged doors
- Attractive styles with mini blinds or shades built in
- Pocket doors can be hidden, giving a cleaner look
Cons
- Rails can be hard to install
- Must have strong load-bearing structure above it to hang off
- can slip off guide rail
- Lets more heat into your home
- Fragile-look for strengthened glass ( tempered glass )
