   Siding

Here at M.H.M.Remodeling "Locally owned and operated in Austin, Tx" we install and repair two types of home siding. Most of our customers choose hardi siding or wood siding because it lasts longer. We install hardi (fiber cement) siding and we install wood (cedar or other wood) siding due to the popularity and longevity of the products. Unfortunately we do not install vinyl siding due to,cracking, fading, warping and hail damage.

Many homeowners find replacement siding a cost-effective way to substantially increase curb appeal. Beyond improving a home's beauty, certain siding types also reduce annual home maintenance costs. Before making a buying decision, homeowners should understand the various siding options. Siding types Wood, fiber cement, and vinyl are common siding types. Each carries its own advantages and disadvantages and is available in a variety of quality levels and prices.

Wood siding.
A low-quality wood-composite product, such as Masonite or LP, is the cheapest siding option. Real wood, such as cedar, pine, oak, and redwood, is usually much more expensive. Wood naturally absorbs water and will deteriorate over time. To protect wood and to keep it looking good, you must paint it every few years.

Fiber cement siding.
Two major brands of fiber cement siding are CertainTeed and Hardi Plank. Fiber cement siding is a composite material made of cement, sand, and natural wood fibers and is manufactured to look just like wood. However, it is more durable than wood and resists damage from water and termites. Fiber cement siding must be painted. It is usually less expensive than brick, but more expensive than vinyl or a wood product, such as Masonite or LP.

James Hardie Siding
James Hardie Siding is made of fiber cement, it does not undergo the same degree of expansion and contraction that hinders wood-based and vinyl sidings. Therefore, James Hardie Siding will hold onto paint three to four times longer than wood siding, reducing your overall maintenance costs, without compromising aesthetics.

Five Things to Consider About Vinyl Siding

  1. It's Only A Cover-Up. Since vinyl siding is often installed over your old problematic existing siding your current problems may continue to get worse. Additionally, since vinyl is not tightly nailed to the home, it invites insects and moisture to build behind panels, potentially penetrating the structure of the home.

  2. It's Flammable. Vinyl siding may melt or burn if heat from a barbeque grill or a fire is nearby. Additionally, numerous counties/districts across the country are going to great lengths to educate homeowners about the inherent flammability of vinyl siding.

  3. It Fades. They told you that vinyl siding was "Life-Time", think again. Over time all colors are going to fade from the sun. So with vinyl what are my options:
    1. Install a replacement piece, good luck finding a matching color.
    2. Reside with vinyl again.
    3. You can attempt to paint it but because it was designed to expand and contract with climate changes, painted vinyl panels tend to crack and peel over time.

  4. The Warranty. What does "Life-Time" really mean? Be sure to closely review the warranty’s fine print to see what is truly covered and for how long. Review closely a vinyl manufacturer’s definition of "Normal Weathering." Ask your vinyl sales rep how much is (4) Hunter Units. In addition most of those warranties have confusing pro-ratings that almost always favor the manufacturer.

  5. It's Only A Cover-Up. Although vinyl siding attempts to imitate the look of wood siding, aesthetically it falls short. Many would argue that its overlapping seams and faux wood grain are very unnatural, leaving the home lacking curb appeal.
